Google.es | Regional Languages | Spain-Specific Spanish
Spain's search market carries a complexity many campaigns miss entirely: Spain-specific Spanish differs from Latin American Spanish in vocabulary and phrasing, and several regions — Catalonia, the Basque Country, Galicia — have their own co-official languages with genuine, distinct search demand. A Spain-wide business that only targets castellano-language, Madrid-centric terms leaves real regional demand on the table.
Spain Spanish is not Latin American Spanish
Content or keyword research sourced from a Latin American Spanish market will use different vocabulary and, at times, different grammar conventions from what a Spain-based buyer expects. It reads as slightly foreign, in the same way American spelling reads as slightly wrong to a UK audience. We research keywords from Google.es specifically, not generic Spanish-language data.
Regional languages are a real opportunity
In Catalonia particularly, Catalan-language search carries genuine commercial demand with meaningfully less competition than the equivalent Castilian term, and Catalan buyers frequently prefer to be served in Catalan where a business offers it. The same pattern applies, at smaller scale, to Basque in the Basque Country and Galician in Galicia. This is the same opportunity as Quebec French or Welsh in the UK — under-served because most competitors do not bother.
How we read Spanish competitors
We build the competitor set from businesses ranking on Google.es in your sector and region, checking results from within Spain rather than assuming. Semrush and Ubersuggest set to Spain estimate overlap and volume; Screaming Frog audits technical structure, including whether a competitor's regional-language pages are correctly implemented or just a token gesture.
Authority, AEO and the fundamentals
Genuine Spanish authority comes from cámaras de comercio, sector associations, regional and national press, and — where relevant — regional-language media in Catalonia, the Basque Country or Galicia. AEO depends on the right language version being the one an assistant reads, which is the same hreflang discipline that underpins good regional-language SEO. Technical SEO and on-page SEO remain the foundation.
